Number of “Specific Skills” Visa Holders

Record high

In April 2019, Japan officially launched the “Specified Skilled Worker (SSW)” visa, which is designed to accept foreign workers who can work immediately to fill job vacancies in 12 labor-scarce industries in Japan.

There are two types of “Specified Skilled” visas:

? Specific Skills No. 1: Allows the holder to work in Japan for up to five years, and is suitable for laborers with elementary to intermediate skill levels;

? Specific Skills No. 2: There is no limit on the length of stay, and the holder is also allowed to bring his/her spouse and children with him/her, which is suitable for people with high levels of specialized skills.

According to the latest data released by the Japan Immigration Office, as of the end of June this year, the number of foreign workers with “specific skills” visa has reached 251,747,000, a record high.

It is worth noting that the Japanese government is considering expanding the scope of application of the “specific skills” visa, and plans to include four industries such as automobile transportation, railroads and forestry in the future.

It is expected that the maximum number of foreign workers with specific skills will double to 820,000 in the next five years, which also highlights Japan's openness to international labor.

Number of foreigners in Japan

Record high

At the same time, the total number of foreigners in Japan is also showing rapid growth.

According to the latest data from Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as of July this year, the number of foreigners in Japan has exceeded the 3 million mark, reaching 3,323,374, an increase of 329,535 from last year.

Among them, the proportion of working-age population is as high as 85.22%, becoming an important force to support Japan's economic and social development.

This trend indicates that it is a favorable time to move to Japan and seek career development. Among the various ways to move to Japan, the Management Visa and the Highly Qualified Person Visa are the most popular.

? Highly Skilled Person Visa

Designed for highly educated and skilled foreign elites, the Highly Talented Person Visa is evaluated using a point system that takes into account factors such as education, professional experience, and annual income. If certain conditions are met, applicants can obtain permanent residence in as little as 1 year.

? Business Management Visa

This visa is for foreigners who wish to start a business in Japan and reside there for a long period of time. Requirements include: registering a company, investing at least 5 million yen in capital, and having a physical place of business. Those who have held the visa for 5 years are eligible to apply for Japanese citizenship, and those who have held the visa for 10 years are eligible to apply for permanent residency.
