Japan adds new measures
Further Attracting Digital Travelers
The term “Digital Nomad visa” refers to people who love to travel and work remotely in IT-related jobs.
Since March of this year, Japan has opened the door for Digital Nomads. A foreigner can be granted the status of residence for “specified activities” and be allowed to stay in Japan for six months as long as he or she meets the following three conditions:
(1) Have an annual income of at least 10 million yen;
(2) Be from one of the approximately 50 countries/regions that can enter Japan visa-free;
(3) Enrollment in a private health insurance plan.
The Japanese government firmly believes that this new system will bring great benefits to Japan. As a result, local governments have developed programs to actively attract foreign talent.
Currently, the Japan Tourism Agency has selected five residency programs offered by local municipalities and companies as pilot projects and is providing up to 10 million yen per project. Authorities will evaluate their economic effects and make adjustments as needed.
Fukuoka City, for example, launched the “Colive Fukuoka 2024” program on Oct. 1, and expects about 400 digital nomads from more than 50 countries and regions to participate. They will be able to sample the city's snacks, experience boathouse culture, and interact with local startups.
A city official said he hoped to use the opportunity to showcase Fukuoka's appeal as an ideal place for remote work and leisure.
In addition, some foreign media reports have pointed out that the influx of digital nomads has led to higher rents in countries such as Portugal and Mexico. Stakeholders say that this may happen in Japan as well.
Therefore, for those interested in investing in real estate in Japan, now may be a good time to seize the opportunity.
