The 2020 National Census data released by the Singapore Bureau of Statistics not long ago revealed important information:
Last year, the local population growth rate fell to the only negative growth in 10 years, and Singapore continued to lack people.
What are the golden opportunities behind the big population data? Xiaoxing will show you~
01
Last 10 years
Singapore's population declines for the first time in 2020
The latest data show that Singapore's population has reached 5.685800 people. Among them, 3.52 million are Singapore citizens, 520,000 are permanent residents, and 1.64 million are non-residents, namely work pass or long-term pass holders.
Looking at the data, the past 10 years have been the slowest growth cycle since the 1970s.

The old problem of slow population growth in Singapore has not changed at all.
2020 is a special year. The total population of Singapore has experienced negative growth for the first time in 10 years.
Compared with 2019, Singapore’s total population fell by 0.3% this year, and the non-resident population fell by 2.1%, which means that Singapore’s work pass holders experienced the largest decline.

But from the side, the decrease in the number of work pass holders is a good thing for foreigners who want to move to Singapore, apply for a Singapore green card, and become a citizen. This virtually alleviates some competitive pressures.
02
Singapore is so short of people
The status application is right now
In the past 10 years, the number of approved permanent residents in Singapore has been very average each year, maintaining around 30,000!
In the four years from 2016 to 2019, the number of permanent residents approved in Singapore each year was more than 30,000.
In 2020, the number of permanent residents approved in Singapore plummeted by more than 5,000, and only 27,500 were approved.
Similarly, the number of Singapore citizens approved is also increasing steadily. From 2016 to 2019, it remained at around 22,000, and in 2020 it dropped to 21,000.
Data source: ICA (Immigration and Checkpoint Administration)
The number of Singapore work pass holders in 2020 can be said to have fallen sharply.
According to Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower’s "Labor Market Report for the Third Quarter of 2020", between January and September 2020, the total employment of Singapore Pass holders plummeted by 158,700.
Could it be that Singapore's immigration policy has tightened in 2020? In fact, due to the ICA (Immigration and Checkpoints Agency) approval work has been at a standstill for a long time during COVID-19 in 2020.
In the second half of 2020, after ICA's examination and approval work returned to normal, many applicants stated that their permanent residents and citizenship status were approved. As for the EP permit, the customers of Nebula International got the approval in just one month, a record speed.
It can be seen that although the number of people approved in 2020 is significantly reduced compared with 2019, Singapore's immigration policy is more open. It can even be said that Singapore's status application is a good time when Singapore is so "short of people"!
03
Relaxation of immigration policy
imminent
From this census data, we can also see that Singapore’s aging problem is serious. In 2020, residents aged 65 and above accounted for 15.2% of the total population, significantly higher than the 9% in 2010 10 years ago. The median age of the resident population rose to 41.5 years.

The fertility rate also worries the Singaporean government. The number of children born to married female residents aged 40 to 49 dropped from an average of 2 10 years ago to 1.76 last year.
It is almost a fantasy to rely solely on Singapore’s own population to solve difficult problems. Therefore, the Singapore government may adopt a relatively loose immigration policy in the future to attract more high-quality foreign talents to stay in Singapore.
