01
Hong Kong Resident Status and Hong Kong Permanent Residence Status
There are two types of Hong Kong identities:
01
Hong Kong resident identity card [non-permanent residence]
The Hong Kong identity card obtained through the means of talents, professionals, and advanced studies is the Hong Kong resident identity card.
People who hold Hong Kong ID cards, that is, non-permanent residents of Hong Kong, regardless of whether they work, live or study in Hong Kong, their mainland accounts will not be affected. They can hold both Mainland ID cards and Hong Kong ID cards to freely enter and exit the Mainland and Hong Kong .
02
Hong Kong Permanent Resident Identity Card [Permanent Residence]
Hong Kong policy stipulates that if the applicant legally has the right of abode in Hong Kong and holds a valid visa and has lived in Hong Kong for 7 consecutive years, he can apply for a permanent resident identity card.
People who immigrate to Hong Kong through talents, professionals, advanced studies, etc., initially obtain a Hong Kong resident identity card. After meeting the conditions of "ordinary residence" in Hong Kong for 7 years, they can apply to become Hong Kong permanent residents. resident identity card.
While obtaining a Hong Kong permanent resident identity card, one can also apply for a Hong Kong SAR passport.
02
Choices for mainlanders after applying for Hong Kong identity
Mainlanders have two choices after applying for Hong Kong identity:
01
Cancel the mainland account and apply for a "home return permit" (Hong Kong and Macao residents return to the mainland)
After obtaining Hong Kong permanent resident status, the mainland account registration must be canceled when applying for a home return permit. Traveling to and from the mainland of Hong Kong is sufficient with the Home Return Permit.
However, assets such as real estate, deposits, stocks, and social security previously registered with the Mainland ID card cannot be changed using the Hong Kong Permanent ID Card and the Home Return Permit. They must go to the relevant Mainland authorities to go through the change procedures with the notarized documents of "belonging to the same person" .
02
Do not cancel the mainland account, do not apply for a "home return permit" (Hong Kong and Macao residents to return to the mainland)
Although this method retains the mainland identity, there will be restrictions on returning to the mainland: you can no longer use the stay visa, and you can only choose other endorsements, such as business visas, tourist visas, etc.
Therefore, it is not necessary to cancel the mainland account to obtain Hong Kong permanent resident status, and the mainland account will be affected only when it is necessary to apply for a "Home Return Permit".
03
Under what circumstances must I apply for a Home Return Permit?
"Home Return Permit" is the mainland travel permit for Hong Kong and Macau residents. It is issued by the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China and is used by residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macao Special Administrative Region with Chinese nationality to travel to and from the Mainland of China. It is equivalent to the Hong Kong and Macau Pass in the Mainland.
Hong Kong permanent resident status holders must apply for a Home Return Permit in the following situations:
★ Participate in the entrance examination for overseas Chinese students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan;
★ Pass the DSE (Hong Kong College Entrance Examination) to apply for mainland universities;
★ Enroll in purely foreign international schools in the Mainland;
★ Returning to the mainland to buy a house, especially in Beijing, Shanghai and the 9 cities in the Greater Bay Area, you need to provide a home return certificate to identify your identity, in order to be exempted from the proof of the number of years of residence, study or work in the local area, as well as payment of personal income tax and purchase of social security and other conditions limit.
04
Do not use Home Return Permit
How to travel between Hong Kong and Mainland China?
Hong Kong resident status and Hong Kong permanent residents can do the following:
Pass through the Hong Kong border with a Hong Kong identity card;
Use the Hong Kong and Macau Exit-Entry Permit to pass through the mainland customs.
Before obtaining permanent residence in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong and Macau Pass can apply for a stay (D) endorsement, and the two places are unimpeded.
It should be noted that after obtaining the Hong Kong permanent resident identity card, the Hong Kong Immigration Department will no longer issue visas, which means that the stay (D) visa cannot be issued in the Mainland. If you need to pass the customs according to the above two points, what should you do?
In reality, if you frequently travel to and from Hong Kong and the mainland and do not want to cancel your mainland account, it is recommended to apply for a business endorsement for the Hong Kong and Macau Exit Permit, which allows you to travel multiple times a year.
Therefore, even if mainlanders move to Hong Kong to become Hong Kong permanent residents and apply for a Hong Kong SAR passport, they do not have to cancel their mainland residence registration.
★ Xiaoxing special reminder:
Hong Kong permanent resident status and mainland household registration may coexist under certain circumstances. But from a long-term perspective, there are many inconveniences: in addition to going to and from the Mainland, the Home Return Permit is an important identity certificate for Hong Kong and Macau residents in the Mainland. It is recommended that you still need to make arrangements according to your actual situation. If you have any questions or needs, you can always get in touch with Xingyunhai International!
